Don't underestimate the cute little Bolonka Zwetna. These sweet rascals are full of energy and are very intelligent. The bond with their family is particularly important to them. But they are also friendly and open-minded towards strangers and other dogs.
Characteristics
Bolonkas are very outgoing and always happy to be around. They like to be with their owner and cuddle with them a lot. It is difficult for them to be alone. They make excellent family dogs.
They are intelligent and love to learn tricks. They have a strong desire to be with their humans and give them pleasure. Bolonkas are therefore well suited to beginners. However, they definitely need sufficient exercise and activity. Then they will not tend to bark.
With a height of up to 26 cm and a weight of 3-4 kg, the Bolonka Zwetna is one of the small dog breeds. Their coat is long and consists of large waves or curls. It comes in all colors except white and pied. However, white markings on the paws, face and chest are permitted. The coat often lightens over time.
They usually have a dense undercoat. A special feature of the breed is that the Bolonka sheds little or not at all. There is no seasonal change of coat. For this reason, these lovable companions are also suitable for some allergy sufferers.

The right food
The Bolonka Zwetna is not particularly demanding when it comes to food. It does not tend to be overweight and is generally not very greedy.
When choosing food, make sure that it contains high-quality ingredients and is balanced.
When a Bolonka puppy moves in with you, it makes sense to give it the breeder's food for a while. Once the puppy has settled in, it can be slowly introduced to the new food.
Puppies can be fed 4 to 6 meals a day, gradually reducing to 2 when the puppy is fully grown.
Health & Care
Grooming these cute dogs is not very time-consuming. The beautiful coat should be brushed every two to three days to prevent matting. It is best to get them used to regular grooming as puppies. The hair can also be trimmed at the groomer. This keeps the eyes free, for example.
Bolonkas only need to be bathed if they are very dirty. Minor soiling can be easily removed with a damp cloth and a brush.
During regular grooming, the skin should be checked for injuries and parasites so that these can be detected as early as possible. Ears, eyes, mouth and paws should also always be checked.
The Bolonka's ears are also hairy on the inside, so dirt can quickly accumulate there. Special ear cleaners for dogs are used to counteract this.
Dental care can be supported with chew toys and chew sticks. However, it is also advisable to brush your four-legged friend's teeth every few days. To do this, use toothpaste for dogs. There are various toothbrushes and finger cots that you can buy in pet shops or online. However, many dogs do not like having their teeth brushed - so start as early as possible.
Suitable accessories
Depending on the coat length, different brushes are suitable for the Bolonka Zwetna. In any case, a coarse-toothed comb for coarse knots and a brush for small knots should be available. A finer comb for the face and a curry comb can also be very helpful for grooming.
A mild dog shampoo is needed if a bath is required. If you want to trim your Bolonka's coat yourself, you will also need special dog scissors.
If you are confident enough to trim your dog's claws yourself, you should get a good pair of claw clippers. Alternatively, you can have your dog's claws trimmed at a dog grooming salon or by a vet.
Like all dogs, this sweet dwarf naturally needs a cozy bed. As an ideal lap dog, he loves everything cuddly. That's why he gratefully accepts blankets and pillows.
A flexi lead, drag lead, food bowl and collar or harness are also part of the basic equipment. The intelligent whirlwind loves to be challenged physically and mentally, so toys and small intelligence games are a must.
Origin & History
The Bolonka Zwetna comes from the Russian Tsar's court. Its ancestors were popular lap dogs for noble ladies. However, these dogs were white. Over time, other breeds were crossed in to create a small, colorful national dog.
Breeding of the new breed began actively in the middle of the 20th century. Among others, the Shih Tzu and the Lhasa Apso were used. The first breed standard for the Bolonka Zwetna was established in 1964 and confirmed by the Cynological Council of the Soviet Ministry of Agriculture in 1966.
In the 80s, the cute four-legged friend also gained popularity in Germany. It still has a loyal fan base today. The VDH recognized the breed in 2011. The FCI, on the other hand, has not yet recognized the Bolonka Zwetna as an independent breed.
