Russkiy Toy history

Origin & History

The history of Russian toys began at the beginning of the 18th century, when English toy terrier came to Russia. They became very popular over time, especially in the aristocratic society. The miniature dogs were admired for their small size and liveliness. It was considered particularly stylish to appear with these small companions in social events or at the opera. They were considered a "living accessory", so to speak, for the upper class of society.

At the beginning of the 20th century, these Toy Terriers had long since become a Status symbol further developed. They were also no longer called Toy Terrier but Russkiy Toy.

However, the Russian Revolution in 1917 contributed to the near extinction of this breed because of its status symbol. After Stalin's death, the breed had regained a foothold and was introduced into the 1950s years bred again. The dogs used for breeding almost all had no pedigree and were not purebred.  From that moment the breed in Russia went its own way and separated from the English breed.

In 1958 something unusual happened and a male with long fringes was born. With this puppy was born the long-haired type of this breed. The parents were both smooth haired, but one of the dogs had slightly longer hair. This male was then mated with a female, which also had slightly longer hair. Thus was born the Longhair version of Russkiy Toys and is also called "Moscow Longhaired Toy Terrier" called.

In 2006 the Russkiy Toy with the variety longhair and smoothhair was recognized as a breed by the FCI.
