Characteristics

You can immediately see what the Sealyham Terrier was originally bred for. The long back and the short legs betray him clearly as a hunting dog. With his shoulder height of 31 to 32 cm he fits into every den. The small terrier pursues its prey, foxes, badgers or polecats up to their burrow to put and kill them. Rats or mice in the yard or in the barn have no chance, is a Sealyham Terrier around. He does not have to learn this behavior, it was bred into him, he has it in his genes.

His coat is either pure white or with brown or black markings. From his time as a hunter, your Sealyham Terrier brings a robust coat, including terrier beard.

With a Sealyham Terrier you have a lovable little friend by your side, always fun and ready for anything. He adapts to your way of life, whether you live alone or have a family. All Sealyham Terriers love children more than anything.

As an active dog, your Sealyham Terrier wants to be kept busy. You don't have to be a hunter, go jogging or biking with him, try a dog sport. To other dogs your pelt nose is friendly and open.

The right food

An active dog, like your Sealyham Terrier, needs balanced, protein-rich food. Whether you feed wet food or dry food doesn't matter. Some little foodies prefer a certain food. Then do the little guy a favor and give it to him. Barfing is becoming more and more popular, as it comes closest to the natural diet of a dog/wolf.

How much you feed depends on several factors. Always feed your pet the food that is appropriate for his age. The body of a young dog has different needs than those of a senior citizen. A lively little whirlwind consumes more energy than a sofa dog. And last but not least, there are big individual differences.
On the packages are guideline values for feeding. Follow these guidelines and watch your Sealyham Terrier. Can you feel the rear rib arches? Is his waist clearly visible? Then your little friend has the right figure.

Health & Care

The coat of your Sealyham Terrier seems to be very high-maintenance at first sight. You should have it trimmed regularly by a professional. Then it is enough to brush and comb your dog every day. Make sure that the coat is really trimmed and not simply shorn. Shearing spoils the coat, it gets dirty quickly and loses its shine.

The long, rough top coat lies over soft undercoat. This double coat makes the fur of your four-legged friend dirt-repellent, robust and resistant. This considerably reduces the amount of grooming required.

As a former hunting dog, your Sealy needs a lot of exercise and activity in the fresh air. Then you can also keep him in a city apartment.

Although he has the typical terrier stubbornness, he is easy to train. Be consistent but loving in training and give your little friend enough time. Once he understands what you want from him, he will work eagerly. A Sealyham Terrier is always eager to do everything properly.

Suitable accessories

Your Sealy needs a food bowl adapted to his size. You should have several water bowls. To ensure that your Sealy has constant access to fresh water, it is best to place water bowls throughout the home. If your Sealyham Terrier can go into a yard or garden, he must have water there as well.

You will need a suitable harness or collar with a leash when you go outside, whether for walking or training. A short, tight leash is best for training. If your pelt nose should have a little more freedom during the walk, take a flexi leash.

For his resting area, your little friend loves a basket or bed with a soft blanket. If your dog spends a lot of time outdoors, he needs a weatherproof, well-insulated hut. In the car, you can transport your four-legged friend safely in a transport box.

Let your dog decide which toy he wants. Some dogs love to chase balls, others prefer to tug or chew.

Sealyham Terrier History

Origin & History

Captain John Edwards was looking for a small hunting dog for his passion, hunting, which exactly matched his ideas. He lived his family estate Sealy Ham in Wales.

For his perfect hunting companion, he crossed resident small dog breeds. Which exactly, nobody knows anymore, probably Fox Terrier, Welsh Corgies, Bull Terrier and Dandie Dinmont Terrier.
He succeeded in breeding a sharp, robust, swashbuckling dog from it. After his death, his daughter continued the breeding.

In 1910 the first breed standard came out and since 1911 the Sealyham Terrier is registered in the Kennel Club. The breed is recognized by the FCI.
