Characteristics

The Havapoo is a small but well-proportioned dog that combines the best features and characteristics of its parent breeds, the Havanese and the Poodle. Its friendly, affectionate and intelligent personality makes it an ideal companion for many people.

The appearance of the Havapoo can vary, as it depends on the parents. In general, however, the Havapoo has a soft, curly or wavy coat that is often hypoallergenic. This is particularly beneficial for allergy sufferers. The coat can have different colors, e.g. brown, black, white or beige, sometimes also multicolored.

The Havapoo is a very affectionate dog that forms a close bond with its humans. It loves to be close to its family and take part in all activities. Its size and adaptability make it a dog that is suitable for different living conditions, e.g. apartments or houses with a garden.

Thanks to its intelligence, the Havapoo is easy to train and loves to learn new tricks. It is well suited to dog sports such as agility, obedience or rally obedience. The Havapoo is eager to learn and makes training a pleasure for both sides.

The Havapoo is a playful and active dog that needs daily exercise and mental stimulation. Its playfulness and energy make it a great playmate for children. It also generally gets on well with other dogs and pets. However, as the Havapoo is small, care should be taken when handling larger dogs or very small children to avoid injury.

The right food

When choosing food, make sure that it contains high-quality ingredients, is balanced and meets your dog's requirements. Age, size or weight, activity and health status play an important role. You should follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the amount of food.

Treats should only be fed in moderation and deducted from the basic diet to avoid obesity.

Puppies can be fed 4-6 times a day. The number of meals should be gradually reduced to 2 per day until the dog is fully grown. A rest period should be observed after meals.

Fresh drinking water should be available at all times.

Health & Care

The Havapoo is a healthy dog, but like all breeds, it can be prone to certain health problems. Pay attention to your Havapoo's eyes, ears and teeth and have him checked regularly by the vet. Patellar luxation, hip dysplasia and eye conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy can occur in this breed. Regular health checks help to detect and treat problems at an early stage.

The curly coat must be brushed regularly to prevent matting. Occasional trimming is also necessary to keep the coat in good condition. The claws should be checked regularly and trimmed if necessary. The ears must be kept clean and dry to avoid infections.

Suitable accessories

We recommend a few important accessories for the Havapoo to meet its needs. These include a well-fitting harness and a lead for walks. A soft and comfortable dog blanket or a basket to sleep in are important to make him feel comfortable in his home. Your Havapoo also needs brushes and combs for regular grooming. Toys for chewing and playing should not be missing, because the Havapoo loves to live out its intelligence and playfulness. Brain games and puzzles are ideal for challenging his mind and preventing boredom.

Other accessories that are part of the basic equipment: Water and food bowl, tick tweezers, claw clippers, mild dog shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste for dogs, transport box for transportation in the car and a first aid kit. Ask your vet what belongs in the first aid kit.

Havapoo history

Origin & History

The Havapoo is a cross between two established breeds: the Havanese and the Poodle. Both parent breeds have a long and interesting history, which contributed to the creation of the Havapoo.

The Havanese originally comes from Cuba, where it is the national dog breed and belongs to the Bichon family. In the 18th century, the Havanese arrived in Europe, where it quickly won the hearts of the nobility and royalty. With its friendly nature and silky coat, the Havanese was also a popular lap dog.

The Poodle has its roots in Germany and France and is often described as one of the most intelligent dog breeds. Poodles were originally used as water dogs to retrieve game from the water when hunting. Over time, their intelligence, hypoallergenic coat and athletic ability made them very popular in various areas such as dog sports and dog shows.

The origins of the Havapoo date back to the 1990s in the USA. Breeders crossed the Havanese with the Poodle to create a small, intelligent and family-friendly dog with hypoallergenic coat qualities. The Havapoo quickly became well-known and popular with dog lovers all over the world.

Although the Havapoo is considered a designer dog and is not recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), there are many responsible breeders who specialize in this breed. It is important to choose a reputable breeder in order to get a healthy and well-socialized Havapoo puppy.
