Is my dog suffering from a worm infestation?

By checking for the following symptoms, you can find out in the future if your four-legged friend is suffering from a parasite infestation.

The following symptoms may occur with a worm infestation:

  • Itching at the anus
  • Diarrhea (sometimes worms are visible in the stool immediately after defecation).
  • Vomiting
  • lack of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Constipation and thick bloated belly
  • dull, lackluster coat

Milbemax® - The worming cure for dogs

As mentioned a little further above, Milbemax® is one of the most common worming treatments in Germany.

The active ingredient of this product is milbemycin and praziquantel. Worms do not tolerate it and die on contact. In the process, the agent also kills the eggs of the worms.

However, in the case of a worm infestation, you should administer the medication for the same length of time as prescribed by the veterinarian. This reduces the risk of new worms hatching and endangering the organism of your four-legged friend.

Milbemax® as an antiparasitic is to be used against the following worm species:

  • Hookworms
  • Roundworms
  • Tapeworms

The correct dosage

The correct dosage of Milbemax® depends on the Body weight of your protégé. It is usually assumed that the veterinarian will administer 0.5 milligrams of milbemycin and 5 milligrams of praziquantel per kilogram of body weight.

If one starts from this dosage basis, one arrives at the following average results, among others:

Dog breed Weight Dosage
Beagle 14 kg 7 mg milbemycin and 70 mg praziquantel
Boxer 27 kg 13.5 mg milbemycin and 135 mg praziquantel
Dachshund 7 kg 3.5 mg milbemycin and 35 mg praziquantel
Great Dane 68 kg 34 mg milbemycin and 340 mg praziquantel
Rottweiler 50 kg 25 mg milbemycin and 250 mg praziquantel

This table is only a guideline and should show you the calculation of the correct dosage.

Since the weight of each quadruped is different, we strongly advise to talk in advance with the vet about the optimal dosage. This determines the body weight and adapts the dosage of the active ingredient ideally to the body weight of your dog.

Side effects of Milbemax®

Unfortunately, more and more often there is the following situationYou go to the vet with the symptoms of your pet. He then prescribes the worming treatment directly without having checked the feces of your pet. So it can be that your darling suffers side effects, although he has finally no worm infestation.

Like any drug, this agent has certain side effects

We therefore recommend that you ask your veterinarian to examine your pet's feces in advance.

Thus, he can determine quite accurately whether your faithful companion has a worm infestation or not.

He can also determine the type of worm and prescribe the ideal medication in case Milbemax® is not successful against this type of worm.

The following side effects may occur with the use of an antiparasitic:

  • Unrest
  • Muscle tremor
  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhea and constipation
  • Vomiting

Worm infestation can be relatively common in a dog. Therefore, veterinarians advise giving a worming treatment every 3 months. Here again there is the problem that you usually do not know whether the dog is actually infested with worms or not.

Therefore our tip: Take a sample of your pet's feces every three months and give it to the vet. The vet can then check whether there is a worm infestation.

What are the alternatives?

More and more dog owners swear by homeopathic or natural remedies. Here are Coconut oil products our absolute recommendation.

These cures can also be prophylactic. This means that there does not necessarily have to be a worm infestation. Coconut products are usually healthy for your cat.

Just mix some coconut oil and coconut flakes into your dog's food and do something good for your pet.

Our experience

A parasite infestation - in the form of worms - can often occur in your dog. A worming treatment is usually the ideal treatment in this case.

However, you should only use these worming treatments if you and your vet are sure that your dog is actually infested. If there is no worm infestation, your dog may suffer from various side effects. Milbemax® is also not always suitable as a prophylaxis.

If you do not know whether your dog is really infested with worms, we recommend to use homeopathic or natural remedies. These help not only with worms, but are generally good for the health of your protégé.

Recommendation from the vet

The topic of worming dogs and cats is often neglected or underestimated. However, if your four-legged friend has worms, then the probability is high that you can also get them.

If you have your Darling and you from parasites, then watch the video to the end and learn more!
