Characteristics

The Burgos Pointer wants to please his humans. He shows very good obedience when he has a confident pack leader who sets rules and can enforce them consistently. The dogs also want to be challenged mentally and physically. They are excellent swimmers and have great stamina.

Dogs of this breed are friendly and adaptable. Due to their size, they should have sufficient space and exercise. They can be kept as family dogs and are considered child-friendly. They are also patient and calm towards other dogs. However, they need daily activity to stay balanced.

The Burgos Pointer is easy to handle and intelligent. Its gentle nature and strong willingness to work make it easy to train. However, consistency in training is essential. Experience with hunting dogs is an advantage. Retrieving is in the nature of these dogs, as is the hunting instinct, which must be kept under control.

These energetic and very active dogs have a strong urge to move. They love to run long distances. If you want to get a Burgos Pointer, you should not be a couch potato. Their keen sense of smell makes them excellent scent hounds and they are ideal for nose work and tracking in the field.

The Burgos Pointer is of medium size with balanced proportions. The dogs have a compact appearance with a well-developed head and muzzle. The legs are well muscled. The coat is liver-grey or liver-colored spotted. The eyes should be hazel and have a gentle expression.

The right food

When choosing food, make sure that it contains high-quality ingredients, is balanced and meets your dog's requirements. Age, size or weight, activity and health status play an important role. You should follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the amount of food.

Treats should only be fed in moderation and deducted from the basic diet to avoid obesity.

Puppies can be fed 4-6 times a day. The number of meals should be gradually reduced to 2 per day until the dog is fully grown. A rest period should be observed after meals.

Fresh drinking water should be available at all times.

Health & Care

The Burgos Pointer is easy to care for. The short, smooth coat should be brushed occasionally with a hard brush. Bathing is only necessary when heavily soiled.

After strenuous work, you can rub your Burgos Pointer down with a damp towel. When grooming, you should also keep an eye out for parasites such as ticks or fleas, especially if you spend a lot of time in the forest. These dogs only shed a moderate amount of hair during the shedding period.

It makes sense to check the paws and claws, especially if they are led for hunting, but also if you are very active and regularly climb over hill and dale. Small stones, splinters of wood or burrs between the toes can get stuck and quickly become an unpleasant nuisance.

Suitable accessories

You will need basic dog equipment for your Burgos Pointer. This includes food, bowls, bed and blankets as well as a collar or harness and lead. Especially for a Burgos Pointer that works a lot in the field or in the forest, it can also be useful to buy a drag line right from the start. This makes training easier and the dog can let off steam freely.

Treats and toys are also important for this breed. Here you need to find out what your dog likes. Retrieving or water toys are certainly a good choice. Intelligence toys that train the nose and dexterity can also be interesting for dogs.

You will also need tick tweezers, claw clippers, a mild dog shampoo, brush and comb, toothbrush and toothpaste for dogs, a transport box for transportation in the car and a first aid kit for your dog. It is best to ask your vet what belongs in the first aid kit.

Perdiguero De Burgos History

Origin & History

The Burgos Pointer has been bred in Spain for centuries. However, the original origin of the breed is not known. It is assumed that the breed originated from a cross between the Sabueso Español and the Pachon Iberico. The appearance of the Burgos Pointer has hardly changed since the breed was created. It is optimally adapted to the climatic conditions of Spain and the rural environment.

In 1911, the breed was entered into the studbook of the Spanish dog association, the Real Sociedad Canina de España, for the first time. By 1936, however, only 319 animals had been registered. The breed was almost wiped out by the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War. Breeding was only resumed in 1950.
