Evening Primrose Oil for Dogs

Evening primrose oil is sometimes used for dry skin and dull coats. It contains gamma-linolenic acid, or GLA. That may make it a small supportive supplement, but it does not replace a veterinary workup for itchy or inflamed skin.

Key Takeaways
  • Evening primrose oil provides gamma-linolenic acid, or GLA
  • It may be worth trying in small amounts for dry coat or sensitive skin
  • Use only a few drops for small dogs and no more than 0.5 teaspoon for large dogs
  • Stop it before surgery because it can affect blood clotting
  • It does not replace veterinary diagnosis for skin disease

Evening primrose oil is best viewed as a niche skin supplement. It may help some dogs with dry skin or a dull coat, but it is not a treatment for skin disease.

Evening primrose oil is pressed from the seeds of Oenothera biennis. The part that makes it interesting is gamma-linolenic acid, or GLA. GLA is an omega-6 fatty acid. The body can make it from linoleic acid, but not always in amounts that cover every situation.

Cold-pressed evening primrose oil contains about 8 to 10 percent GLA, which is high compared with many other plant oils. Whether that makes a visible difference depends on the dog's overall diet and individual needs.

When Evening Primrose Oil Can Make Sense

This oil comes up most often in dogs with dry or sensitive skin. The idea behind it is straightforward: GLA contributes to skin lipids and may support the skin barrier and moisture balance.

Supplementation makes the most sense in dogs with a dull coat or flaky skin when no underlying disease has been identified. Some owners also try it for itchy skin. Even then, it is hard to know whether any improvement comes from the oil, a diet change, the season, or the normal coat cycle.

What evening primrose oil cannot do is treat skin disease. A dog with persistent itching, hair loss, open sores, or recurring ear infections needs veterinary diagnostics. At that point, oil is only a supportive measure.

Dosage

With evening primrose oil, less is more. It is concentrated and should be mixed into food in very small amounts.

As a guide:

  • Small dogs, up to 10 kg: a few drops
  • Medium dogs, 10 to 25 kg: about 1/4 teaspoon
  • Large dogs, over 25 kg: up to 1/2 teaspoon

Start with the smallest amount and watch your dog for a few days. If you see diarrhea, soft stool, or appetite changes, reduce the amount or stop using it.

Quality and Storage

Cold-pressed evening primrose oil sold as a food-grade oil is the best choice. Refined oils lose some of their more delicate fatty acids.

GLA oxidizes easily, so keep the bottle in a cool, dark place. Once opened, store it in the fridge and use it within a few weeks. Rancid oil does more harm than good.

When to Be Careful

Evening primrose oil can affect blood clotting. Stop giving it at least one week before planned surgery and tell your vet that your dog has been receiving it.

Dogs taking anticoagulant medication should not get evening primrose oil unless a vet approves it. The same caution applies to dogs with liver disease or known intolerance to plant oils.

Pregnant or nursing dogs should receive evening primrose oil only after veterinary advice.
