Which ingredients work well in dog biscuits?
The base for good dog biscuits is oats, spelt flour or rice flour. Add a binder like eggs or banana, then something tasty: liver sausage, cheese, peanut butter (xylitol-free!) or blended fruit. The good news: you don't need anything exotic. Almost everything is available at your regular supermarket.
Safe ingredients
- Oats, spelt flour, rice flour
- Liver sausage, cottage cheese, parmesan
- Banana, apple, carrot, pumpkin
- Peanut butter (xylitol-free), coconut oil
- Plain yoghurt, quark, eggs
Toxic to dogs
- Chocolate, cocoa, caffeine
- Xylitol (birch sugar), sweeteners
- Raisins, grapes
- Onions, garlic, leeks
- Macadamia nuts, avocado
How to bake perfect dog biscuits every time
The most common mistake: too much liquid in the dough. Dog biscuits should be dry and firm so they last longer and help keep teeth clean. Bake at 160-180°C, then leave them in the switched-off oven to dry out completely. That's what gives them that satisfying crunch.
One more tip: keep them small. For training you want lots of little rewards, not a few big ones. A silicone baking mat with small moulds works perfectly. The biscuits pop out easily and come out uniform in size.
Store the finished biscuits in an airtight tin. In the fridge they keep for 6-8 weeks, frozen up to 3 months. It's worth baking a big batch and stocking up.
