Training challenges rarely come alone: a median of five per dog profile

In 52.6 per cent of the Hundeo profiles with at least one recorded training issue, owners selected five or more challenges. The issues that appear most often, and the ones selected together, change markedly across a dog's life stages.

Hundeo as a data source

First-party app data, not a commissioned opinion poll

The analysis uses aggregated information entered by dog owners in their Hundeo profiles. This creates an unusually large, real-world dataset on specific training issues, supported by openly documented methods and ready-to-use tables.

The dataset's strengths are its size, recency and proximity to owners' everyday concerns. The sample is self-selected, is not representative of Germany or any other country, and records self-reports rather than diagnoses or causal relationships.

The analysis examined 25,589 profiles across 23,507 German-language app accounts, created between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026 and containing at least one active training selection. Owners recorded a median of five of the 22 available issues, with a mean of 5.47. Lead pulling is the most common individual problem: 13,491 profiles, or 52.7 per cent, contain this selection. It is followed by ‘does not listen to me’ at 48.0 per cent and eating things from the ground at 40.6 per cent. A closer look at 5,099 profiles with a plausible date of birth reveals clear differences across life stages. Eating things from the ground leads among dogs under one at 53.6 per cent. Lead pulling reaches 66.9 per cent among one- to two-year-olds and 54.2 per cent among three- to five-year-olds. Among the 598 profiles of dogs aged six or older, strong reactions to other dogs take first place at 54.7 per cent. Combinations change too. Mouthing and eating from the ground are selected together particularly often for young dogs. Later, lead pulling, distractibility and strong reactions to other dogs become more prominent. Hundeo analysed aggregate profile data only and has published the ranking, age comparison, distributions and combinations as open CSV files. The findings are self-reports from a self-selected app sample. They are not representative, do not constitute a diagnosis and cannot establish causes.

Methodology

The analysis was performed only on aggregated data and frozen in a read-only, repeatable database transaction.

  • Starting cohort: 41,439 dog profiles from German-language app accounts, created from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026.
  • Main analysis: 25,589 profiles from 23,507 user accounts with at least one of the 22 active training challenges.
  • Data cut-off: profile state frozen on 11 July 2026 at 17:30 UTC; selections may have changed since profile creation.
  • Age analysis: 5,099 profiles with a plausible date of birth; age groups and combinations refer only to this subsample.
  • The language code de describes the app language and is not a reliable country or residence filter.
  • No names, email addresses or individual user profiles were exported.

Context and limitations

  1. 1.The sample is self-selected and not representative of all dog owners in Germany or elsewhere.
  2. 2.Categories are owner self-reports, not veterinary or behavioural diagnoses.
  3. 3.Multiple selections were possible and categories are not independent.
  4. 4.Only profiles with at least one selection form the denominator of the main analysis.
  5. 5.One user account may contain more than one dog profile.
  6. 6.Age was missing for many profiles; the age groups are a selected subsample.
  7. 7.Age differences are descriptive and do not demonstrate causation.
