Ingredients

  • 500 g minced beef
  • 300 g carrots
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 bunch of parsley, chopped
  • 250 g cottage cheese
  • dog treats, dog biscuits or dog sausages for decorating

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan)

  2. 2

Wash the carrots and chop or grate them into small pieces, then knead them together with the mince, parsley and eggs into a smooth mixture

  3. 3

Grease a springform tin and spread the meat mixture evenly inside it

  4. 4

Bake the dog cake in the oven for about 45 minutes. Once baked, let it cool and spread the cottage cheese or a little quark over the top

  5. 5

Decorate the cake with treats however you like

Tips and notes

Make the cake the day before and keep it in the fridge - it cuts better and the flavours develop. Add the cottage cheese topping just before serving to keep it fresh. Grate the carrots finely rather than dicing them for a more even texture and a slightly sweet note. Mince can be swapped for turkey mince if your dog does not get on with beef.

Storage

Keeps in the fridge for 3-4 days. You can freeze the cake in portions and defrost as needed. Freeze without the cottage cheese topping and add it fresh after thawing.

Variations

  • Turkey mince instead of beef for sensitive dogs
  • Sweet potato instead of carrot for variety
  • Quark instead of cottage cheese as topping
  • Dog biscuits and mini frankfurters for decoration

Which dogs is this suitable for?

All dogs from 6 months. If your dog has a known beef allergy, use turkey mince. Adjust the portion size to your dog's weight: small dogs get a thin slice, large dogs a normal portion.

Common questions

Can I make the birthday cake the day before?
Yes, and it's actually recommended. The cake cuts better after a night in the fridge. Add the cottage cheese topping just before serving.
Which mince works best for a dog birthday cake?
Beef mince is the most popular choice. Turkey or lamb mince works equally well. Important: no seasoned mince or anything containing onions. Fresh, unseasoned mince from the butcher is best.
How do I decorate the dog cake?
Cottage cheese makes great frosting. You can top it with dog biscuits, mini sausage pieces, or carrot slices. Some owners pop a birthday candle in the middle. Make sure every decoration is edible and safe for dogs.
How much cake can my dog eat?
The cake is a treat, not a main meal. For a medium-sized dog (15-25 kg), a slice of about 100-150g is plenty. Smaller dogs get less. Share the rest over a few days or with dog guests at the birthday party.
