Ingredients

  • chicken meat
  • rice
  • tomato puree
  • parsley

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

Cut the chicken into small pieces

  2. 2

Cook the rice and chicken in separate pans until done

  3. 3

Arrange the meat and rice on a plate, finish with a little tomato puree and parsley, then serve

Tips and notes

Cook the rice until very soft and mushy - the easier it is to digest the better. Use boneless, skinless chicken breast. Add the tomato puree in a small amount; it mainly adds flavour. If diarrhoea is severe, leave out the tomato puree as it can further irritate the stomach. Stir in the parsley after cooking to preserve the vitamins. Serve lukewarm, not straight from the pot.

Storage

Keeps in the fridge for 2-3 days. Can be frozen in portions for up to 2 months. To defrost, leave in the fridge overnight and bring to room temperature before serving.

Variations

  • Turkey instead of chicken (equally lean and gentle on the stomach)
  • Potato instead of rice (peeled, well cooked)
  • Carrots as an added vegetable (good for digestion)
  • Cottage cheese as a protein source instead of meat (easy to digest)

Which dogs is this suitable for?

Dogs with diarrhoea, vomiting, after surgery or with stomach upsets. Also suitable as a transition diet after fasting. See a vet immediately if diarrhoea lasts more than 2-3 days, there is blood in the stools, fever, lethargy, refusal to drink, or if the dog is both vomiting and has diarrhoea.

Common questions

How long should my dog eat a bland diet?
Usually 2-5 days, until digestion has settled. Then gradually return to normal food: 75% bland diet and 25% regular food on day one, increasing the proportion of regular food each day. An abrupt switch can upset the stomach again.
Which rice is best for a dog bland diet?
White rice (e.g. jasmine or basmati) is best as it is easy to digest. Brown rice or wholegrain rice contains more fibre and can put extra strain on the stomach. Cook the rice with twice as much water until soft and almost porridge-like.
Can I add seasoning to the bland diet?
No seasoning, no salt, no sauces. Your dog's digestive system is already irritated and spices would make it worse. Garlic and onions are off-limits too - they are toxic to dogs. The only exception: a small spoonful of tomato puree or fresh parsley.
When should I take my dog to the vet?
Go straight to the vet if: diarrhoea lasts more than 2-3 days, there is blood in the stools, fever, lethargy, refusal to drink, or the dog is both vomiting and has diarrhoea. Puppies and elderly dogs should be seen sooner as they dehydrate more quickly.
