Homemade dog ice cream: 14 recipes for hot days
Your dog is panting in 30-degree heat? A homemade dog ice cream brings relief and doubles as a fun treat. All you need is a few ingredients, a freezer, and 10 minutes of prep. Here you'll find 14 recipes from the Hundeo app, all free from refined sugar. Many work without any dairy too.
10 minutes prep
Most dog ice cream recipes take under 10 minutes to prepare. Then just pop them in the freezer for 3-4 hours.
Let it thaw slightly
Leave the ice cream out for 5-10 minutes before serving. Ice straight from the freezer can upset a dog's stomach.
Not regular ice cream
Human ice cream has too much sugar and dairy. Many dogs are lactose intolerant. Only feed dog-specific recipes.

Cherry Yoghurt Ice Bites

What kinds of ice cream can dogs eat?
The base for most dog ice creams is plain yoghurt, quark, or cottage cheese. These contain less lactose than milk and are well tolerated by most dogs. If you want to play it safe, use lactose-free yoghurt or simply blend fruit with a little water.
The best fruits for dog ice cream are watermelon (seedless), strawberries, blueberries, banana, and raspberries. Carrots and pumpkin work well too and add a gentle sweetness. Peanut butter (always without xylitol!) makes the ice cream creamier and adds protein.
Dog ice cream without yoghurt: options for sensitive dogs
If your dog reacts badly to dairy, there are good alternatives. Frozen blended fruit with water is the simplest option. Coconut milk (not coconut drink) also works as a base. Liverwurst ice cream is surprisingly popular with dogs: mix liverwurst with water, pour into moulds, and freeze.
You can also use the mixture on a lick mat: spread it thinly and freeze. It keeps your dog busy for even longer than a popsicle.
