Homemade dog treats: 48+ snack recipes

Homemade dog treats are the perfect training reward: you control the ingredients, choose the size, and save money compared to shop-bought options. Liverwurst balls, cheese drops, or fruit snacks — here you'll find 48+ recipes for every taste.

Follow the 10% rule

Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog's daily calorie intake. Adjust the main meal accordingly.

Keep them small for training

Training treats should be pea-sized. The goal is to reward, not fill up. Many small ones beat a few large ones every time.

Mix it up

Switch between different treats. What's high-value today gets boring tomorrow. Variety keeps motivation up.

Homemade vs. shop-bought: is it worth the effort?

One look at the ingredient list of many commercial treats tells the story: sugar, grain flour, animal by-products, and preservatives. With homemade treats you know exactly what your dog is eating. You can work around allergies, control calories, and use quality ingredients.

The time commitment is manageable: most recipes take 15-20 minutes to prepare. A batch lasts 2-4 weeks depending on the recipe, and frozen treats keep for several months. Compared to premium treats from a pet shop, you can save around £5-10 per month.

The biggest win: your dog will love you for it. Freshly baked treats smell more intense than packaged ones, which makes them far more motivating for training.

Common questions about dog treats

How many treats can a dog have per day?
Treats should make up no more than 10% of a dog's daily calorie needs. For a medium-sized dog (15 kg) that's around 30-40 kcal, roughly 5-8 small homemade treats. When training intensively, reduce the main meal slightly.
Which treats work best for dog training?
Training treats should be small (pea-sized), soft, and especially tasty. Liverwurst balls, cheese cubes, or dried meat pieces all work well. Your dog should be able to eat them quickly without having to chew for long.
Can I use dog treats as rewards for puppies?
From around 12 weeks you can use soft, small treats as training rewards. Make sure the ingredients are gentle and cut the pieces extra small. For very young puppies, a piece of their regular dry food often does the job too.
