Tips and notes

Smooth liver sausage gives a more even dough than coarse. Cottage cheese adds a great texture and plenty of protein. Oats bind the dough well and are low in gluten. Keep the biscuits small: thumbnail-sized pieces are perfect as training treats. Leave the biscuits to cool on a rack so they firm up evenly on all sides.

Storage

Keeps in an airtight tin for 3-4 weeks, in the fridge for 6-8 weeks. Can be frozen for up to 3 months. Well-dried biscuits keep longest.

Variations

  • Tuna in brine (drained) instead of liver sausage
  • Add 2 tbsp spelt flour for a firmer dough
  • Grated cheese (Gouda or Parmesan) for extra flavour
  • Grate in a carrot or apple for a twist

Which dogs is this suitable for?

All dogs. Especially popular as training treats because the strong liver sausage smell motivates dogs. Suitable for puppies from 12 weeks - just make the biscuits extra small.

Common questions

Which liver sausage should I use for dog biscuits?
Plain smooth liver sausage from the supermarket works best. Check it contains no onions or garlic. Many dog owners use cheap supermarket brands. Coarse liver sausage also works but gives a more uneven dough.
Can I use a different flour instead of oats?
Yes, spelt flour, rice flour or buckwheat flour are good alternatives. Oats have the advantage of binding the dough well while also providing fibre. You can also mix: 100g oats and 100g spelt flour.
How big should the dog biscuits be?
For training treats: thumbnail-sized (about 1-2 cm). Your dog gets lots of small rewards without too many calories. For chew snacks between meals, they can be a bit larger (3-4 cm).
Can puppies eat liver sausage dog biscuits?
From 12 weeks, puppies can have small pieces. Make the biscuits extra small and start with just 1-2 to test tolerance. Liver sausage is rich in vitamin A, so feed in moderation.
