Some terriers make good family dogs, especially the Jack Russell Terrier, Airedale Terrier, and Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. Bull Terriers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers are also child-friendly with proper training. Very small terriers like the Yorkshire Terrier are less suitable for toddlers.
Terriers were bred as hunting dogs and were meant to alert to prey through barking. This behavior is deeply ingrained. With consistent training and sufficient activity, excessive barking can be significantly reduced.
