Characteristics

The Russian Black Terrier is considered a working dog. It reaches a shoulder height of up to 80 centimeters. Males are significantly larger and stronger than females. The two sexes are therefore easy to distinguish.

The coat is black, but can be interspersed with gray hairs. The hard, wavy and dense rough coat is up to 15 centimeters long when unshorn.

The Russian Black Terrier has a moustache that resembles a brush. The lower jaw also has a beard and the eyebrows are rough and shaggy.

The terrier is considered to be even-tempered. In defensive situations, however, it can react with lightning speed and sometimes aggressively. They also tend to be suspicious of strangers. However, they are affectionate and friendly towards people they know. This is why the Russian Black Terrier is a popular family dog today.

It is relatively long-lived and can live for up to 14 years.

The right food

Due to its breeding for robustness, the Russian Black Terrier is normally very healthy. As it is a large dog, it is advisable to have it checked for hip and elbow dysplasia. The breed is prone to neurological diseases, heart disease and eye diseases.

As far as nutrition is concerned, you can follow the nutritional rules that generally apply to large dogs. Large breeds are sometimes prone to obesity, digestive problems and stomach upsets.

When choosing food, make sure that it contains high-quality ingredients, is balanced and meets your dog's requirements. Age, size or weight, activity and health status play an important role. You should follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the amount of food.

Treats should only be fed in moderation and deducted from the basic diet to avoid obesity.

Puppies can be fed 4-6 times a day. The number of meals should be gradually reduced to 2 per day until the dog is fully grown. A rest period should be observed after meals.

Fresh drinking water should be available at all times.

Health & Care

As the Russian Black Terrier was bred as a working dog, it has a strong sense of work. It is therefore important to keep him busy on a regular basis.

The Russian Black Terrier should be trained from an early age. They respond very well to consistent instructions. For this reason, the breed generally performs very well in the dog sport of obedience. The Russian Black Terrier is also successful in agility competitions and Schutzhund trials.

Give the dog enough exercise. Otherwise he can become hyperactive and destroy things in his environment.

Its coat must be brushed two to three times a week to prevent it from matting. Hair that grows towards the eyes must also be trimmed to prevent inflammation. The same applies to the hair in the ears.

The coat should be trimmed every one to two months. Grooming is good for your dog's well-being. It also strengthens your relationship.

If the claws do not wear off by themselves, they must be trimmed regularly.

Suitable accessories

The Russian Black Terrier is a strong dog. It is therefore worth getting him a harness. This distributes the pull of the lead over the whole body. In this way, a harness puts less strain on the dog's body than a collar. The lead should be particularly sturdy for large or strong dogs.

Your dog will also need toys to encourage exercise and intelligence, a dog basket or dog mat as a retreat, water and food bowl, tick tweezers, hair and claw clippers, mild dog shampoo, brush and comb or rubber curry comb, toothbrush and toothpaste for dogs, a transport aid or for transportation in the car and a first aid kit. It's best to ask your vet what should be in the first aid kit.

Origin & History

In the 1940s, the army kennel Roter Stern began breeding its own dog breed. The aim was to create a large, almost massive, robust and spirited dog. This dog was to be able to cope with the contrasting climatic conditions of the Soviet Union.

They were guided by the findings of Soviet cynologists and created four breeding lines.

These consisted of several matings:

a giant schnauzer male with a female airedale terrier
a male Rottweiler with a female Giant Schnauzer
a male Giant Schnauzer with a female Airedale Terrier.

A total of 20 breeds were used for breeding the dog.

The result is a terrier that can differ greatly in appearance. However, their temperament remains largely constant from dog to dog. The breed is willing to work. It is therefore ideal for guarding boundaries. It can also protect certain objects.
