Calculate chocolate poisoning risk based on theobromine content
The toxic dose depends on the chocolate type. Our calculator considers the combined dose of both toxic methylxanthines (theobromine + caffeine) from a database of 98 products in 15 categories. From 20 mg/kg methylxanthine, first symptoms may appear; above 60 mg/kg it becomes life-threatening.
First symptoms appear 2-4 hours after ingestion: vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, and increased heart rate. Severe cases include muscle tremors, seizures, and cardiac arrhythmia. Contact your vet immediately!
Note the amount and type, then call your vet immediately. Within the first 2 hours, the vet can induce vomiting. Activated charcoal can reduce theobromine absorption. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.
