Quick Answer
  • Yes, dogs can eat oatmeal
  • Cook in water without sugar
  • Good fiber source for digestive issues

Yes: dogs can eat oatmeal. Oats provide fiber, vitamins and minerals and are well tolerated. Only prepare in water without additives and feed in moderation.

What Oatmeal Does for Dogs

Oatmeal contains beta-glucan, a soluble fiber that supports digestion and has a regulating effect during diarrhea. B vitamins, iron and magnesium are additional nutrients. Oats are low in wheat gluten: for dogs with wheat allergies they can be a possible alternative (though oats contain avenin, an oat-specific protein that can also trigger intolerances in some dogs).

Oatmeal works well as a light side dish for sensitive stomachs or after diarrhea.

What to Watch Out For

No instant oats or porridge mixes with sugar, salt or flavoring: these additives are unsuitable for dogs. Only cook plain oats in water. Let them cool completely before serving.

In large quantities, oatmeal can cause bloating or digestive problems.

How to Feed Oatmeal

Cook oats in water, let them cool and mix as a side dish into dog food. Alternatively, sprinkle raw over food: in small amounts this also works. Use as a supplement, not a main meal.

Nutritional Values and Dosage

100 g of rolled oats contain approx. 372 kcal, 13.5 g protein, 10 g fiber (of which approx. 4.5 g beta-glucan), 5.4 mg iron and 130 mg magnesium. After cooking in water, the calorie content drops to approx. 70 kcal per 100 g because the flakes absorb water.

Guidelines by body weight (cooked, per meal):

  • Small dog (up to 10 kg): 1 tablespoon (approx. 15 g dry)
  • Medium dog (10 to 25 kg): 2 tablespoons (approx. 30 g dry)
  • Large dog (over 25 kg): 3 to 4 tablespoons (approx. 45 to 60 g dry)

Soaking overnight in water is an alternative to cooking and preserves heat-sensitive B vitamins. Store dry oats in a sealed container: they keep for 6 to 12 months. Use cooked leftovers from the fridge within 2 days.
