- Yes, dogs can eat flaxseed
- Mix ground flaxseed into food
- Rich in omega-3 fatty acids for coat and skin
Yes: dogs can eat flaxseed. As with many food supplements for dogs, preparation matters. Whole flaxseeds are often excreted undigested and deliver almost no nutrients. Ground or crushed flaxseeds are the right form: that way omega-3 fatty acids and fiber are actually absorbed.
What Flaxseed Does for Dogs
Flaxseeds are rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid. ALA supports skin and coat, has anti-inflammatory properties and can positively influence joint health. Fiber supports digestion. The mucilage in flaxseed can soothe irritated stomach linings.
What to Watch Out For
Only use ground or crushed flaxseeds: whole seeds pass through the digestive tract mostly unused. The oils in flaxseed oxidize quickly: grind fresh or buy small amounts and store cool.
Max. 1 to 2 teaspoons daily depending on body size. Too much can cause diarrhea.
How to Feed Flaxseed
Mix ground flaxseed directly into food. Alternatively, flaxseed oil: 1 teaspoon per 10 kg body weight as a convenient substitute. Do not heat flaxseed oil.
Nutritional Values and Dosage
100 g of ground flaxseed contains approx. 534 kcal, 18.3 g protein, 42.2 g fat (of which 22.8 g omega-3 as ALA), 27.3 g fiber and 255 mg magnesium. The calorie content is high, but the daily feeding amount is small.
Guidelines by body weight (ground flaxseed, daily):
- Small dog (up to 10 kg): ½ teaspoon (approx. 2 g)
- Medium dog (10 to 25 kg): 1 teaspoon (approx. 4 g)
- Large dog (over 25 kg): 2 teaspoons (approx. 8 g)
Always feed ground flaxseed with enough water so the fiber can swell in the gut. Without liquid, the swelling capacity can lead to constipation or bloating rather than relieving it. Use freshly ground flaxseed within two weeks, as the fatty acids oxidize quickly.
