The Griffon bleu de Gascogne is a recognized dog breed from the southwest of France. It is assigned by the FCI to group 6 and is a running and hunting dog. On the hunt he is used either in a pack or alone. He is very active and likes to hunt. His prey animals are mainly wild boars, deer and also red deer.

This dog breed is very elegant in appearance. The fur noses have a rough coat and very distinctive, hanging floppy ears. On the skull, the hard and shaggy fur is slightly shorter than on the rest of the body. The hair of this breed is shortest on the ears.

The shade of his coat has a characteristic slate blue shimmer. This is where the name of this dog breed comes from. "Bleu" is in fact the French word for blue. This effect comes from the complete black and white mottling of the Griffon bleu de Gascogne.

A Griffon bleu de Gascogne female reaches a height at withers between 48 and 55 centimeters. Male specimens grow slightly larger. They can reach up to 57 centimeters in height. The quadrupeds should not exceed a weight of 29 kilograms. With these dimensions, the Griffon bleu de Gascogne belongs to the medium-sized running dogs.

The Griffon bleu de Gascogne has its roots in the southwest of France, more precisely in the Pyrenees. It originated from a cross between the long-haired Griffon and the Grand Bleu de Gascogne. By the way, the Grand Bleu De Gascogne is very similar in origin to the Petit Bleu De Gascogne. He stands in a long tradition of French hunting dog breeding. Since 1963 the Griffon bleu de Gascogne is officially recognized by the FCI.
