Characteristics

The shade of his coat has a characteristic slate blue shimmer. This is where the name of this dog breed comes from. "Bleu" is in fact the French word for blue. This effect comes from the complete black and white mottling of the Griffon bleu de Gascogne.
A Griffon bleu de Gascogne female reaches a height at withers between 48 and 55 centimeters. Male specimens grow slightly larger. They can reach up to 57 centimeters in height. The Griffon bleu de Gascogne has its roots in the southwest of France, more precisely in the Pyrenees. It originated from a cross between the long-haired Griffon and the Grand Bleu de Gascogne. By the way, the Grand Bleu De Gascogne is very similar in origin to the Petit Bleu De Gascogne. He stands in a long tradition of French hunting dog breeding. Since 1963 the Griffon bleu de Gascogne is officially recognized by the FCI.
