The Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier, a medium-sized, strongly built dog, is a real powerhouse. He is not only intelligent and patient, but also amazingly adaptable. He copes well in both urban and rural environments and shows a remarkable ability to adapt to different lifestyles. Despite its size, it has considerable strength and amazing stamina, which once made it a valuable helper in agriculture.

The right food

When choosing food, make sure that it contains high-quality ingredients, is balanced and meets your dog's requirements. Age, size or weight, activity and health status play an important role. You should follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the amount of food.

Treats should only be fed in moderation and deducted from the basic diet to avoid obesity.

Puppies can be fed 4-6 times a day. The number of meals should be gradually reduced to 2 per day until the dog is fully grown. A rest period should be observed after meals.

Fresh drinking water should be available at all times.

Health & Care

Grooming is easy. Regular brushing keeps the coat beautiful and healthy. Once a week is enough. Pay attention to his ears and eyes and keep them clean. The claws must not be too long. Brushing his teeth is also important. A visit to the groomer can be worthwhile for a professional cut.

Suitable accessories

You will need the following basic equipment for your Glen: a comfortable bed, bowls for water and food. A sturdy lead and a collar or harness are important for walks. Toys are a must. They keep him mentally and physically fit.

Also think about grooming articles: A good brush, dog shampoo, claw clippers, tick tweezers, toothbrush and toothpaste for dogs.

A transport box is very helpful for transportation in the car. A first aid kit is recommended for health reasons or in case of injuries. Ask your vet what should be in the first aid kit.

Origin & History

The Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier originally comes from County Wicklow in Ireland. Its roots go back to the 17th century.

It was used for badger and fox hunting and as a farmyard dog. Its strength and stamina made it the ideal dog for rough country life. It is one of the four Irish terrier breeds.

It almost fell into oblivion in the 20th century, but lovers of the breed kept it alive. Today it is known worldwide, but is still rare. Its characteristic appearance and balanced character make it a special dog.

It is part of Irish history and culture. A real treasure among the dog breeds.
