Assess your dog's body condition on the 9-point scale and get recommendations
The BCS is a standardized 9-point scoring system used by veterinarians worldwide. It assesses a dog's body condition based on visual and palpable features like rib palpability, waist visibility and abdominal tuck — and is more meaningful than weight alone.
Feel your dog's ribs: at BCS 5 (ideal) they're easily palpable but not visible. View from above: the waist should be recognizable. From the side: the abdomen should be slightly tucked up. Compare with the detailed descriptions for each level.
BMI calculates a ratio of weight to body size, while BCS assesses body condition visually and by palpation. BCS is considered more accurate as it accounts for muscle mass and fat distribution. Ideally, both are used together.
