How do I calculate my dog's calorie needs?
The resting energy requirement (RER) is calculated as 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75. This value is multiplied by an activity factor: 1.2 for sedentary dogs up to 2.5 for working dogs. Our calculator also considers age, neutering status, and life stage.
Do neutered dogs need fewer calories?
Yes, neutered dogs have 20-30% lower energy requirements. Without adjusting food intake, they gain weight quickly. Gradually reduce portions after neutering and monitor weight regularly.
How many calories does a puppy need?
Puppies need significantly more energy than adult dogs: about 2-3 times the resting energy requirement. Energy needs peak in the first 4 months. From 6 months, requirements gradually approach adult levels.
