- Yes, in small amounts, dogs can eat tangerines
- Feed them peeled and without seeds
- High acid content: not too much at once
Yes: tangerines are not toxic to dogs. But their high sugar and acid content limits the sensible amount to one or two segments as an occasional snack. Always remove the peel and seeds.
What tangerines do for dogs
Tangerines contain vitamin C and fiber. Dogs produce vitamin C in their own bodies, though, so their need for it is low and tangerines do little to raise it. That makes the nutritional value of tangerines fairly limited for dogs. Better vitamin sources are apples or blueberries.
What to watch out for
Tangerines are high in sugar and acid. Too many segments at once can cause stomach trouble or diarrhea. Dogs with diabetes or who are overweight should not get tangerines at all.
Always remove the peel: it contains essential oils that can irritate the stomach. Remove the seeds as well.
How to feed tangerines
Peel the tangerine, remove all seeds and separate it into individual segments. Give 1 to 2 segments as an occasional snack. No canned tangerines: these always contain added sugar.
Nutritional values and amount
100 g of tangerine contains roughly 53 kcal, 0.8 g protein, 12 g carbohydrates (of which 10.6 g sugar), 1.8 g fiber and 27 mg vitamin C. The limiting factor for sensitive dog stomachs is the acid content (pH 3.5 to 4.0), not the nutrient content.
Guideline by body weight (peeled tangerine segments, max. twice per week):
- Small dogs (up to 10 kg): 1 to 2 segments as an occasional snack
- Medium dogs (10 to 25 kg): 1 to 2 segments as an occasional snack
- Large dogs (over 25 kg): 1 to 2 segments as an occasional snack
Where possible, remove the white pith between the segments: it holds concentrated essential oils and is hard to digest. Never give tangerines on an empty stomach, since the fruit acid encourages heartburn.
