  4. 4

    Bake for about 20 minutes

  5. 5

Take the tray out of the oven and let the banana crunchies cool completely

Tips and notes

Use really ripe bananas - the riper they are, the sweeter and easier to mash. Warm the coconut oil slightly so it's liquid and blends more easily with the oats. Do not make the shapes too thin; about 1cm thick is ideal. If the dough is too sticky, just add a bit more oats. The biscuits are done when golden brown and firm to the touch.

Storage

Keeps in an airtight tin for 2-3 weeks, in the fridge for up to 5 weeks. Can be frozen for 3 months. The high banana content means they do not keep quite as long as plain flour biscuits.

Variations

  • Apple instead of banana (grated, gives crunchier biscuits)
  • 1 tbsp peanut butter (xylitol-free!) for extra protein
  • Stir in chopped parsley for a fresh flavour
  • Fine oats for softer biscuits, rolled oats for more bite

Which dogs is this suitable for?

All dogs, including puppies from 12 weeks. Oats are low in gluten and well tolerated. For grain allergies, use coconut flour instead of oats. Great as training treats: make them small and prepare a big batch.

Common questions

How many ingredients do you need for dog biscuits?
For simple dog biscuits, just 3 ingredients: banana, oats and coconut oil. No flour, no eggs, no sugar needed. The banana acts as both a binder and a natural sweetener.
Can dogs eat oats?
Yes, oats are safe and nutritious for dogs. They provide fibre, B vitamins and iron. Oats are low in gluten (though not entirely gluten-free) and are well tolerated by most dogs. 1-2 tablespoons per day is fine depending on the size of your dog.
Can dogs eat banana?
Yes, bananas are perfectly safe for dogs and actually healthy. They contain potassium, magnesium and vitamin B6. Feed in moderation though: too much banana can cause loose stools due to the sugar content. Half to one banana a day is fine depending on your dog's size.
Can I make dog biscuits without an oven?
These banana oat biscuits need an oven (20 min at 200C). If you do not have one, you can fry the dough in a pan over low heat or dry them in a food dehydrator at 65C for 6-8 hours.
