Determine your dog's daily water needs for optimal hydration
Determine your dog's daily water needs
Important: Water amount may vary based on individual needs. Monitor your dog's drinking behavior and ensure fresh water is always available. For unusual drinking behavior (too much or too little), consult a veterinarian.
The rule of thumb is 50-60 ml per kg body weight per day. A 20-kg dog needs about 1-1.2 liters daily. In heat, after exercise, or on dry food, needs can rise to 80-100 ml/kg. Puppies and lactating dogs drink more.
Typical signs: dry gums (instead of moist and shiny), skin tenting (scruff fold returns slowly), sunken eyes, lethargy, and dark, concentrated urine. With persistent dehydration, see your vet immediately.
Yes. Excessive drinking (polydipsia) can indicate diabetes, kidney disease, Cushing's syndrome, or poisoning. Water intoxication (hyponatremia) is also possible during extended water play or swimming. If your dog drinks significantly more than 100 ml/kg/day, see your vet.
