Adult dogs need 5-15% fat in their daily ration (dry matter basis). Active and working dogs tolerate up to 20%. Puppies need 8-12% for brain development. Too little fat causes dull coat and low energy.
Yes. Chronically high fat intake leads to obesity, pancreatitis, and joint problems. Miniature Schnauzers, Cocker Spaniels, and Shetland Sheepdogs are particularly at risk. For overweight dogs, reduce fat to 5-8%.
Salmon oil provides omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) for coat and joints. Flaxseed oil contains ALA, which dogs can only partially convert. Coconut oil has antimicrobial properties but few essential fatty acids. A mix of oils works best.
