Determine the safe amount of seaweed supplements for your dog
Calculate the safe dosage of seaweed supplements
Seaweed can provide valuable minerals, but dosage must be correct. Too much iodine can be harmful! This calculation is based on the scientific formula: 0.0296 mg iodine per kg body weight per day.
See product information (usually on packaging)
Typical Iodine Content (Examples):
β’ Ascophyllum nodosum (Knotted wrack): 400-800 mg/kg
β’ Kelp (Seaweed): 1500-2500 mg/kg (very high!)
β’ Spirulina: 30-80 mg/kg
β’ Chlorella: 20-50 mg/kg
Important: Always use the exact values from your specific product!
IMPORTANT: NEVER use seaweed without veterinary advice for thyroid conditions or iodine allergies! Overdosing can cause serious health problems.
Seaweed itself is not toxic and contains valuable minerals (iodine, iron, zinc). However, beach-washed seaweed is dangerous: it can swell, block the stomach, and cause fatal obstructions. Dried, stale seaweed also contains high bacterial and salt concentrations.
Dogs need approximately 15-20 Β΅g iodine per kg body weight daily. Seaweed products (kelp, spirulina) have highly variable iodine levels. Overdose (above 50 Β΅g/kg/day) can damage the thyroid. Only feed seaweed supplements with known iodine content and veterinary guidance.
Go to the vet immediately. Beach seaweed swells up to three times its size in the stomach and can cause life-threatening intestinal blockages. Symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, distended abdomen. Treatment often requires emergency surgery.
