- Raw pork can contain the fatal Aujeszky virus
- Well-cooked pork is safe
- Also never feed raw wild boar meat
Cooked or roasted pork is safe for dogs: as long as it contains no seasoning, onions or garlic. Raw pork is a serious risk.
Why Raw Pork Is Dangerous
Raw pork can carry the Aujeszky virus and belongs on the list of foods dogs must not eat. For humans it is harmless: for dogs it is fatal. The virus causes so-called pseudorabies: severe neurological symptoms that inevitably lead to death. If you suspect poisoning, act immediately. No treatment exists.
This risk also applies to raw wild boar meat: it can carry the same virus.
What Cooked Pork Offers
Cooked pork is a good protein source for muscle development and overall health. It also contains vitamins and minerals that benefit dogs. As an occasional supplement to main food, it is safe.
How to Feed Safely
- Only well-cooked pork: no raw meat, no smoked meat
- No seasoning, onions, garlic or sauces
- As an occasional supplement, not as main food
- No raw wild boar meat: same danger as domestic pork
Dangerous Amounts
With the Aujeszky virus there is no safe threshold: a single contaminated piece of meat can trigger the infection. The incubation period is 2 to 9 days. First symptoms are restlessness, loss of appetite, vomiting and intense itching around the head (mad itch). Within 24 to 48 hours after symptom onset, the disease is fatal.
The virus is reliably killed at a core temperature of 60°C or above. Smoking, curing or air-drying are not sufficient because the temperature typically stays below 60°C. Salami, ham and raw sausages made from pork are therefore also considered unsafe.
In Germany, between 2021 and 2025, Aujeszky antibodies were detected in wild boar in 14 of 16 federal states. The risk from domestic pigs is lower, but not zero.
