Homemade Dog Biscuits: 41 Recipes

Homemade dog biscuits have one big advantage over shop-bought treats: you control the ingredients and can work around allergies. No sugar, no preservatives. From liver sausage cookies to cheese crackers and grain-free options.

160-180°C, 15-20 min.

Most dog biscuits bake at medium heat. Leave them in the switched-off oven to dry out afterwards for extra crunch.

Flour alternatives

Rice flour or buckwheat flour are gluten-free alternatives. Spelt flour works too, though it does contain gluten. Oats help bind the dough.

Keep them small

Thumbnail-sized biscuits are perfect for training. Lots of small rewards beat a few big ones every time.

How to store homemade dog biscuits

Properly dried biscuits keep for 3-4 weeks in an airtight tin, or 6-8 weeks in the fridge. Frozen, they last up to 3 months. Biscuits with meat or cream cheese don't keep as long and should go straight in the fridge.

The most important thing: biscuits must be completely cool before you pack them away. Any remaining moisture leads to mould. If in doubt, leave them in the switched-off oven for another 10 minutes after baking.

Common questions about dog biscuits

What temperature should I bake dog biscuits at?
Most dog biscuits are baked at 160-180°C for 15-20 minutes. Leaving them to dry out in the switched-off oven afterwards makes them extra crunchy and extends their shelf life.
Which flour works best for dog biscuits?
Spelt flour, rice flour and oat flour are popular choices. For grain-free biscuits, buckwheat flour, coconut flour or ground flaxseed work well. Wheat flour is fine, though some dogs are sensitive to gluten.
How long do homemade dog biscuits keep?
Well-dried dog biscuits keep in an airtight tin for 3-4 weeks. In the fridge, 6-8 weeks. Frozen, up to 3 months. Biscuits with meat fillings keep for less time.
